Egypt’s petroleum sector drew most of the $6.7 billion in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) that flowed into the country’s oil and mineral resources sector in fiscal year (FY) 2025/26, up from $6.2 billion a year earlier, according to the Central Bank of Egypt’s (CBE) balance of payments (BoP) report.

Net inflows reached $190.2 million, largely supported by an increase in greenfield investments by foreign oil companies. Sector outflows, which cover cost recovery for exploration, development, and operations incurred by foreign partners, rose from $5.6 billion to $6.5 billion.

The rise in oil-sector investment comes as Egypt works to raise domestic hydrocarbon production, attract international oil companies (IOCs), and reduce its reliance on imported petroleum and natural gas.

Egypt has secured more than $19 billion in investment commitments from IOCs over the next three years. The pledges include $8 billion from Italy’s Eni, $5 billion from bp, $4 billion from US-based Apache Corporation, and $2 billion from the UAE’s Arcius Energy.

Petroleum exports rose 18.1% to about $6.6 billion in FY2025/26. Petroleum product exports increased by $1.2 billion and natural gas exports by $206 million, driving the gain. Crude oil exports fell by $350.6 million on lower export volumes.

Petroleum imports rose 27.6% to $24.9 billion, driven by higher purchases of natural gas and crude oil. Natural gas imports increased by $4.7 billion and crude oil imports by $1.9 billion, while petroleum product imports fell by about $1.2 billion.

Growing petroleum investment and Egypt’s drive to reduce its reliance on imported fuels are creating new opportunities across the sector. Egypt Energy Show 2027 will take place from 30 March to 1 April 2027 at the Egypt International Exhibition Centre in Cairo, bringing together 600 companies and 60,000 attendees.
