Egypt has signed a financing agreement with the European Union worth up to US$787 million to modernise its national electricity transmission network, supporting the country's renewable energy ambitions and reinforcing its position as a regional energy hub.

The funding package includes up to US$684 million in loans from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and US$103 million in grants from the European Commission. The investment will enable the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) to upgrade critical transmission infrastructure, allowing up to 22GW of renewable energy to be integrated into the national grid by 2030.

The enhanced network is expected to improve grid reliability, reduce transmission losses and provide electricity to nearly 10 million households. It will also strengthen Egypt's ability to transport electricity from renewable energy-rich areas such as the Gulf of Suez and the Red Sea coast to key industrial and population centres.

The project supports Egypt's long-term strategy to increase renewable energy capacity while addressing one of the sector's biggest challenges—expanding transmission infrastructure to keep pace with growing investments in solar and wind power. The investment also forms part of the EU–Egypt Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership and the Trans-Mediterranean Renewable Energy and Clean-Tech Cooperation Initiative (T-MED), which aim to strengthen regional energy cooperation, encourage private sector investment and accelerate the development of integrated electricity markets across the Mediterranean.

As electricity demand continues to grow, the upgraded transmission system will help improve network resilience, support future electricity exports and enable greater integration of renewable energy projects, contributing to Egypt's ambitions of becoming a leading /power-grid and /clean-energy hub in the region.

Why This Matters for the Energy Industry

As Egypt accelerates investment in electricity transmission and renewable energy infrastructure, the country is laying the foundations for a more resilient, interconnected and sustainable energy system. Expanding grid capacity will be critical to integrating new renewable projects, supporting industrial growth, strengthening regional electricity trade and achieving Egypt's long-term energy transition objectives.

Taking place from 29–31 March 2027 in Cairo, the Egypt Energy Show will bring together policymakers, utilities, grid operators, renewable energy developers, technology providers, investors and industry leaders to explore the projects, partnerships and innovations driving the future of energy across Egypt and the wider region.

Attendees will have the opportunity to:

  • Gain insights into Egypt's latest grid modernisation, renewable energy and infrastructure developments.
  • Connect with government representatives, utilities and leading energy companies driving strategic investment.
  • Discover technologies supporting electricity transmission, grid digitalisation, energy storage and system resilience.
  • Explore partnership opportunities across power generation, transmission, distribution and clean energy projects.
  • Participate in strategic and technical conference sessions focused on energy security, grid infrastructure and the energy transition.

As investment in electricity infrastructure continues to accelerate, the Egypt Energy Show provides a platform to engage with the organisations, technologies and decision-makers shaping the next generation of Egypt's energy landscape.
