The initiative represents a major milestone in Egypt’s energy transition, reinforcing the country’s commitment to increasing renewable energy capacity while strengthening the resilience and efficiency of its power infrastructure. It also underscores the growing collaboration between Egypt and European institutions in accelerating the development of a more sustainable energy future.

The financing package combines a EUR600 million loan from the European Investment Bank’s development arm, EIB Global, with grants of up to EUR90 million from the European Commission.

The funding will support critical upgrades to Egypt’s electricity transmission and distribution systems, enabling the network to accommodate the rapid expansion of renewable energy projects across the country. By enhancing grid capacity and reliability, the investment is expected to facilitate greater integration of solar and wind power, improve energy security, and support Egypt’s long-term decarbonisation goals.

As Egypt continues to position itself as a regional energy hub, the strengthened partnership with the European Union highlights the importance of international cooperation in delivering the infrastructure needed for a low-carbon economy.
